Wall Pieces
Inspired by nature and capturing the light. Silk isn't just to wear!
Painted silk looks great hanging on a wall, too. Silk takes color with an intensity that practically makes it glow.
Inspired by the Scottish coast in early autumn
This piece began with my simple love for the striking combination of deep blue and gold, and my fascination with the night sky. It reminds me of what the movement of planets might look like if recorded by time-lapse photography. The bold gold lines show the movement of planetary bodies close to the viewer, while the tiny dots of gold are distant. I wanted to contrast the excitement and immediacy of the movement in the foreground with the serenity of infinite space that stretches out beyond it.

ATTACK OF THE FIBER ARTISTS: A Group Show by Members of the Textile Artists
Association--August 2014
The website http://www.translationsart.com states its mission as fostering conversations among art, artists and community. Nestled in an artsy nook in Canton, the area merchants hold a monthly "Canton First Friday Event" giving all the opportunity to visit and enjoy local merchants and establishments
Members of the Textile Artists Alliance are exhibiting throughout August. I'll be showcasing my framed silk pieces at this edgy Canton gallery (331 Cleveland Ave NW)
I wanted to play with simple geometric shapes – straight lines, circles, spirals, triangles – and varying textures. I built the piece with these basic blocks, adding layers of muted color and details using markers, paint and gutta. I used broad strokes of dark brown paint to anchor the piece and give it weight. Out of this grew an image resembling a tree. I purposely left gaps in the gutta resist that separates the tree image from the background in order to soften the hard lines and impart a feeling of antiquity and decay, like an ancient sheet of papyrus. The piece is meant to look both modern in its abstraction and very old and mysterious in tone.
I wanted to represent the place inside each of us that remains steady and calm no matter what is happening around us. It’s easy to forget we have this amazing tool.
